And now for something completely new

After a long, chaotic, beautiful, relentless, draining, and yet energizing month (that some people like to refer to as September) I finally got back into my studio today. Yep, it had been almost a full month since I last held my brushes and honestly, I'm not sure how I did not implode.

But I made it. And this afternoon my oils felt like the sweetest balm, my brushes sturdy in my hand, and my thoughts decisive and sure. It felt so right.

So I made a new decision, and set up the very first ever [time lapse] video of me, painting in my studio. This painting, whose working title is "The Inheritance," is about half done (so keep that in mind!). Today was the first day of detail work but there is still a long way to go and much more to paint. I continued on for another couple hours after this video - which just happens to be the exact time length as 10,000 Maniacs "Live in New York" - so if you see my open mouth belting out tunes you can bet it's either "Eat for Two" or "Hey Jack Kerouac" (hey, I already told you that in my world I sound just like Miss N. Merchant!).

So with out further ado, here is,
well,
me!

"The Inheritance"

She has always been there
At my back
Darkness strips none of Her glory
Fear can not exist and
burdens do not lap Her
For She radiates life in the deep
She is my estate,
My inheritance

my dear, my dear. thank you for this gift!

1. your STANCE in first photo is something to behold. ready to take on, wrestle, embrace, and make beautiful the world. the color & light is also marvelous. but mostly, your almost nonchalant posture of strength.

2. i'm very excited about this piece, the title, and what is behind it. these lyrics.

3. my closest friend at college was a painter (watercolor). after watching this SWEET video of you working/living/being, i'm reminded that painting is such a poignant metaphor for life...

you pay such close attention to detail, and this is required, but unless you step back to take it all in, the whole picture, the small areas you work to perfect and understand are but fragments. and, you work and work on one small piece, and then move onto the next piece, and after hours of backache and hand cramps, you step back and are overwhelmed with the feeling that it has all become more than you knew, more than you realized while you were focused in on one part. the intense attention to smallest detail, the stepping back...it is overwhelming.

i'm no rocket scientist with all that crap, but it's what your entry has left me with, so i'm sharing nonetheless, even if it's really nothing new :)

i am beyond all gladness of words this morning, seeing this video. your blog and picture and video is like the cooling cucumber on my puffy eyes.

ACCIDENTALLY FABULOUS INDEED! Are you freaking kidding me? I know you are a gifted painter, but seeing it in warp speed only intensifies that you are so sure, confident, and fabulous at this. It looks like an accident, like whoops - there i put this white circle in and it was fabnulous and blend, blend, I am amazing. :) I know there is no such flippancy in your method...

It looks like a place in your life where you don't have to care for anyone and therefore do not waver in indecision. Such solace, such good nugets of treats for your soul. You take your brush to canvas with an intimidating and inspiring determination. It moves me to see you this way.

Lastly, THAT STANCE. sheesh. Could you maybe take it down a notch so others can keep up.

that's a huge f'ing joke - but reminds me of a song:

"Hurt that's not supposed to show
And tears that fall when no one knows
When youre trying hard to be your best
Could you be a little less.

Do you know what it feels like for a girl?" ~Madonna.

Wow. Thank you for sharing.

I feel like I just had a visit with you, even though we're still too far away from each other. I am very proud of you for sharing your creative process... with all of us. It brings me great joy to see you opening that part of you. I think we are all better people for it.

Ladies-mine (and Madonna too), thank you EVER so much for your kind words, they go so far to encourage and inspire me, lifting me on to new highs of creative energy.

Really, honestly, it makes me want to run right out, in the rain and the dark, to the studio and get back to work!

What is the book you were reading from...maybe writing it?

The book (otherwise known as my most treasured belonging, my entire thought process) is my sketchbook, both for writing new and reading old. I go through a fairly thick one every year and half or so, filled with words and images. They are my truest history.
