The Current List

IMG_8579
I am just about to head into the studio; the pickle pot is warm, those berries are now history, the puppies are sleepy and the day has turned shockingly cold and misty for July.  But first I thought I would share a list with you, a list I sat down and took the time to write out over a cup of chai.
(and on that note, tell me if you're interested in the BEST recipe for a completely herbal, vegan "chai" - I'll gladly share)
I've been sparse on the web lately, sparse on words in general, but pouring every ounce of energy into the studio.  It's a building period, a time of stretching and growing, even if there is not too much to show.  I'm striving for deeper, richer, maybe a little raw around the edges, freer, lighter, and ever, ever truer.  Thinking on all this, I put pencil to paper and wrote out a short list of my current inspirations, those things I am thinking on, meditating on, working on when I sit down at the bench or tie my apron around my neck.
I'd love to share them with you.

~ The Current List of Inspiration ~

~ The lilting, curving, swooping flight patterns of swallows
~ Wild fennel blooms
~ Topographies, radiating landmasses, concentric circles
~ Vultures
The rich, undulating minty green of variscite
~ The alizarin stain of raspberries on skin
~ Medicine wheels, cyclical imagery
~ Night creatures
~ The venation patterns of dragonfly wings and arugula blossoms
~ Wild grass seed heads in both their tightly woven geometry and nonsensical sprawl
~ Key holes, tiny windows, mysterious pockets that hold whole worlds within our world
~ Barn owls, always barn owls.

And sometimes, they all come together.

I would definitely be interested in the chai recipe. It's hard to find one that has just the right balance of spiciness.

Yes! Chai please! Of course, I'll have to have mine iced, but there's nothing wrong with that!

LADIES! Here it is: Vegan "Chai" (or, as we call it in this household, "Backrub in a Cup")

Set 10 cups of water to boil in a medium pot on the stove.
Peel and slice (thickly) 1 1/2 inches of ginger (or more if you like the kick). Drop this in the pot of water and simmer for 30 minutes.
Now add your spices!
3 Tbsp Coriander Seeds
1 1/2 Tbsp Cardamom Pods
4 Cinnamon Sticks
5-6 Whole Cloves
1-2 Black Peppercorns

Let all this simmer for another 30 minutes. Just like this it will keep in the fridge for at least a week. When you're ready for a cup, mix in almond milk (I've done rice too) and a smidgen of either maple syrup or agave and heat gently on the stove. Voila!

SO GOOD!

My goodness,
What a stunning piece!
grace, whimsy, and a depth that speaks of birth and of flowering into life.
And yet it has a weight to it - not heavy, simply the weight of earth, soil and deep baritone harmonies ...that's it, this necklace reminds me of a beautifully sung harmony ... different parts, when united sound like the richest song.

I don't suppose you are taking reservations for this piece are you?

Such a beautiful piece.
concentric circles and creatures within circles is something I come back to in my work time and time again, I think I must embrace the pull of it.
Thank you for the recipe I will give this a try at the weekend. x

Um, WOW!!! But even before I saw the necklace, your list of inspiration was so beautiful to read. We all have our list of things that inspire us, things that touch us in some way based on our own gizzards, but to be able to read someone else's list opens another door doesn't it? And maybe it shines a kind of bright that we haven't seen before. I love it. And now I am inspired to write and see what brings me light today...
Thanks for the chai recipe, and the new door!!

So I now have a big ol' pot o chai on my stove. I just leaned over it and said, out loud, to my empty house, "Oh my Gosh. That smells SO GOOD."

So thanks!
